The family lived in Ohio about 1803 for the father died there. Shannon was born about 1787 in Pennsylvania, the son of George David Shannon and Jane Milligan. Upon the Corps' return, he was placed in charge of the official reports of the journey. He was personally selected by Meriwether Lewis as one of the so-called "nine young men from Kentucky".
