This novel is Volume 1 of the Raven Children series. I did not find anything to like about this novel, so I can only vote it 2 stars.īlack Hat is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2012. It was hard to feel any empathy for Maeve as she has quite a spoilt little girl attitude. Her relationship with her parents is disrespectful and she can be rather rude to everyone. There is nothing special about this story and it did not provoke much interest for me. However, the entertainment value is POOR and this is not a fulfilling read. Black Hat is an easy read and provides a distraction. Because it delves into the supernatural it loses any gritty urban realism. It shows how just one pill of an unknown substance can wreck your life and maybe lose your sanity. I suppose this novel is aimed at Young Adults as it highlights the dangers of taking drugs. Black Hat is a supernatural tale about a strange old man with big eyes who watches Maeve whilst wearing a black hat. She takes just this one pill and suddenly things start to go wrong for her. Maeve is a 22 year old university student who has been given a pill by her room-mate Anne to help her study better.

Mel Gordon is the author of Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin. This book tells the back story of the unsuccessful strip and Siegel and Shuster’s ambition to have their funny Jewish superhero trump Superman. All the turmoil and personal disasters in Siegel and Shuster’s postwar life percolated into the comic strip. But when the naïve duo launched their new comic character Funnyman in 1947, it failed miserably. Their contract with the DC publishers was soon heralded as the most foolish agreement in the history of American popular culture.Īfter toiling on workman’s wages for a decade, Siegel and Shuster struggled to come up with a new superhero, one that would right their wrongs and prove that justice, fair-play, and zany craftsmanship was the true American way and would lead to ultimate victory. Not only did they lose the ownership of the Superman character, they also agreed to write and illustrate it for ten years at ten dollars per page. Siegel and Shuster, two Jewish teenagers from Cleveland, sold the rights to their amazing and astonishingly lucrative comic book superhero to Detective Comics for $130 in 1938. Included are complete comic-book stories and daily and Sunday newspaper panels from Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s creative fiasco. Here is a kaleidoscopic analysis of Jewish humor as seen through Funnyman, a little-known super-heroic invention by the creators of Superman. A high school mathematics teacher who sacrificed his dream of being a math guru/researcher to look after his aged parents. Ishigami is a middle-aged loner who wants nothing more of life than to be able to be left alone to do his mathematics research. This was an EXCELLENT murder mystery! The characters were well drawn and the plot nothing short of ingenious! WOW! Just goes to show how wrong a person can be. With the narrative set in Japan, it did not appeal to me – not even a little bit. It was the required reading of my “Whodunit” bookclub. First off, I have to say, this title was not MY choice. It wasn’t until some time after the release of Kingdom of Flesh and Fire that I realized this wasn’t at all what I initially thought and decided to give it a try. I ignored it, assuming it would be similar to the book I didn’t like. Then news of From Blood and Ash started exploding in my Facebook group of YA Fantasy Addicts and a JLA book made it onto my radar once again. I’d seen a few of her books here and there and even tried reading one at one point, but I jumped in at the wrong point and it turned me off. Armentrout is like rediscovering a dessert you’d forgot you loved, then devouring it far faster than you’d have liked, at the same time enjoying every bite. Reading The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L. Devouring the From Blood and Ash series? Here’s my take on it and my The Crown of Gilded Bones review. Ayer further claimed that the propositions of logic and mathematics were analytic truths and that there was no natural necessity, necessity being a purely logical notion. Statements about physical objects were said to be translatable into sentences about our sensory experiences (the doctrine known as phenomenalism). This, the verificationist theory of meaning, was used by Ayer to deny the literal significance of any metaphysical propositions, including those that affirmed or denied the existence of God. The major thesis of logical positivism defended by Ayer was that all literally meaningful propositions were either analytic (true or false in virtue of the meaning of the proposition alone) or verifiable by experience. Ayer made his name as a philosopher with the publication of Language, Truth and Logic in 1936, a book which established him as the leading English representative of logical positivism, a doctrine put forward by a group of philosophers known as members of the Vienna Circle.
